SAINT JOSEPH'S CATHEDRAL, GREENHILL ,SWANSEA

When Father Wulstan Richards came to Swansea in 1875, the church consisted of a large plain building with rubble walls. Father Richards felt sorry for the people, who lived in terrible conditions in small, cramped houses. He wanted to provide them with a comfortable and pleasant place to pray and worship God.
Father Richards asked an architect, Peter Paul Pugin, to design a church. In the design much symbolism was used to help the people to raise their minds and hearts to God, and away from the conditions in which they lived. The church was completed in 1888. It cost £10,000 and took two years to build. In 1987, one year short of its centenary, St. Joseph's became a cathedral at the inauguration of the new Diocese of Menevia.
